Celebrating International Pet Memorial Day

Canine Cancer Research - Where We Are Today

Canine cancer is a serious and prevalent issue that affects many of our beloved animal friends. Hemangiosarcoma is one of the deadliest forms of canine cancer.

In 2012, Morris Animal Foundation launched its Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, designed to identify the risk factors for cancer and other major diseases in dogs. The Study’s primary endpoint is 500 cumulative diagnoses of four cancers – hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma, high-grade mast cell tumour and osteosarcoma.

In April 2024, 10 years into the Study and nearing the Study’s defined endpoint, data shows a clear prevalence of hemangiosarcoma as the leading cause of cancer death. Of all dog deaths to date, 75% are cancer-related; of those cancer deaths, almost 70% are hemangiosarcoma.

This has led the Morris Animal Foundation to lead a new hemangiosarcoma Initiative to dedicate funding, people and resources to advance the prevention, detection and treatment of, and potentially cures for, this devastating cancer.

The new initiative is a multi-year, multi-million-dollar project to dramatically change the story of hemangiosarcoma from one with an ending of almost certain death to one with a new beginning.

Pawprints 4 Hope Walk for Canine Cancer

My mission with Pawprints 4 Hope is to raise awareness and funds to combat this devastating disease. Your participation and donations directly contribute to research efforts aimed at finding more canine cancer treatments and ultimately a cure for hemangiosarcoma. We can make a difference.

On the Sunday before International Pet Memorial Day in June, we gather to remember and honour the pets we've lost and support the fight against all canine cancers, with a specific focus on hemangiosarcoma.

All donations go directly to the canine cancer research funds at the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC), University of Guelph (Canada) and the Morris Foundation Golden Retriever Lifetime Study (US). I am grateful to partner with these organizations to establish projects under the Mr. Carson Cares initiative, directly supporting their canine cancer research efforts in North America. Together, we have created the Mr. Carson Cares Project Funds to ensure our contributions have a direct long-stretching impact.

To Donate: Contributions of any amount are greatly appreciated at any time throughout the year. I do not collect any funds directly. All funds are collected by the OVC and Morris Animal Foundation through the Mr. Carson Cares project pages below.

Thank you for your support and participation. Let's walk together for hope, healing, and a cure.
